In general, I think it’s hard to predict multiple decades of development in security. The role of CISO is less than twenty-five years old, but I believe the current trends will continue for at least the next five to ten years. Those trends being the role continuing to evolve to focus more on risk management and engagement with the business leaders of organizations, and less on the technical side. This is the case now for some CISOs in particularly mature organizations. The role will be about setting policyand helping the business understand the risk trade-offs of decisions, as well as measuring and tracking the changes in risk posture. I think as organizations mature, the CISO role will migrate out of the IT function (where most CISOs report today), and into the Risk Management team.
